This drill helps children develop a throwing/serving motion, as well as learn basic footwork patterns. Place a row of balls across the court along the service line or beyond, with one ball at each of the sidelines and one on the center line. Have the children start at the ad court doubles sideline, move to pick up the first ball and throw it over the net, then run or sidestep to the middle ball and throw it over, and then go to the third ball. Place targets across the net, add more balls or place the balls further away to keep it challenging.

  • Parent-coaches can quickly replace the balls so children don’t have to wait.
  • Left-handers should go before or after the right-handers and start from the deuce side.
